Advantages: User generated tutorials and DIYs. Endless amount of resources for creating and building anything the brain can imagine.
Disadvantages: May be difficult to distinguish between good and better tutorials. Product quality level can vary.
I use these all the time. I agree that it can sometimes be hard to find something good, but when you do, they are fantastic resources.
